World AIDS and HIV Day 🗓

admin - December 1, 2018 - 0 comments

Since 1988 UN Members have participated in World AIDS Day; this year the Secretary-General’s published call is urgent, caring, persuasive.

Genre: Health, Official Day.

Venue: Worldwide (all UN Member States).

Dates: December 1, 2018.

Sponsors: The United Nations and all UN Member States.

Description: Governments and organizations based within and across the borders of all United Nations Member states will today publically acknowledge and foster progress on care, culture, knowledge, prevention, and research concerning AIDS and HIV. It is a day worth setting aside — to remind us of how much has been accomplished, and what more we can do.

Statistics provided by UNAIDS confirm that, by 2017, more than 77 million people have been infected with HIV, and the number living with HIV is approximately 36.9 million.

For more details, please see the event’s official site created by the UN. Please also see the statement released by the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres. And UNAMID provides here a report of World AIDS commemoration in El Fasher, North Darfur.

“There is still time — to scale-up testing for HIV; to enable more people to access treatment; to increase resources needed to prevent new infections; and to end the stigma. At this critical juncture, we need to take the right turn now.”

— António Guterres, the United Nations Secretary-General
