Description: Jason Moran leads his trio, The Bandwagon, through an exploration of James Reese Europe in France during WWI. Reese Europe arrived as part of the African-American 369th Infantry Regiment – the ‘Harlem Hellfighters’ a military band that introduced war-torn France and Europe to the performance, rhythms, and sounds of jazz.
Music is accompanied by visuals from filmmakers John Akomfrah and Bradford Young. The result is a meditation on an iconic figure and an essential way jazz’s influence and value as an art form was established in the early twentieth century.
