Performers: Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, among the world’s most cherished dance companies, renowned for both its brilliant artistry and passionate energy. Has grown from a 1958 New York performance at the 92nd Street Y, led by Alvin Ailey and a group of young African-American dancers, to a company with a mission to continue to alter the perception of American dance, celebrate the African-American experience, and enrich modern dance globally. The Ailey company has performed for an estimated 25 million people in 48 states and 71 countries, on 6 continents. In 2008, a US Congressional resolution designated the Company “a vital American cultural ambassador to the world.”
